There’s good news and bad news for those of us who are very overweight: We’re more likely to develop anxiety, but we’re less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol:
Obesity is associated with a 25 percent increase in the risk of developing mood and anxiety disorders and a 25 percent decrease in likeliness for substance abuse, according to a paper in the July issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Actually, I can believe the small picture of this study. I am definitely more prone to depression now than I was 50 pounds ago. But aside from an occasional desire to smoke a joint (which I haven’t done in a decade), drugs don’t tempt me, and I haven’t been drinking much at all.
