Video Entry #6: Vacation fall-out

Current weight: 30X?

Show notes:

Recovering from the effects of vacation. Camping is fun, but it doesn’t lend itself to eating well. Too much bad food = weight gain, and I am expecting at least a 5 lb. gain this week.

A fun exercise variation: I take a different train to work, then walk from there. This increases the walking distance to work from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. Instant extra activity points!

Plus confessions of laziness and being lax.

Down a total of 10 pounds so far this year. Yay me! This is an important milestone to me.

Summertime heat is here. I hate summer. Too damned hot, makes my lunchtime walk almost impossible. So I am changing things up, taking a different train in the morning so I have to walk 20 minutes to get to the office.

Watch out for liquid calories! It’s easy to wreck one’s diet and not even realize it by drinking sugar-sweetened drinks. Via Our Lady of Weight Loss:

Do you find it impossible to stop snacking? Here are 50 activities to do instead of snacking. Note that having sex is suspicously absent from the list. Hmmm…

Tip of the week: Put things back! When grocery shopping, stop every couple of aisles and see if there’s anything in your cart which isn’t conducive to your new life style. If there is, put it back on the shelf. :)

Weigh-in for March 31, 2009: Building motivation

Current weight: 312.6

I know it looks like I gained a bit there, but it is deceiving. I forgot to post an update here last week. I was up then, and lost most of that extra weight this week. And it was legit: I was pretty positive that I lost a bunch this time around. I even told the Weight Watchers leader that before weigh-in.

The biggest change I made this week: getting back into the swing of walking at lunch during the week. I had used my health issues earlier this year as an excuse to stop walking, and then I got lazy. I started coming up with reasons to skip my walk. And suddenly I simply wasn’t walking at all.

I did have some eating incidents this week. It’s close to Easter, and there are so many good easter candies out there. Well, actually, there’s only a couple I really like, mainly the marshmallow-circus-peanut-type chicks and ducks. This week, Easter itself is coming up. Hopefully I can stay focussed during brunch on Sunday.

Update for 11/19 (or so)

Well, I still dunno if I can talk much about the last couple of months. Other than the obvious. I have had a really bad summer, eating whatever I wanted, whether I was hungry or not. Making bad choice after bad choice. Eating. things I don’t even know for certain that I wanted to eat. But I ate them anyway. [sigh]

On the plus side, I have continued to get in 40 minute walks every work day. And I enjoy it. I actually look forward to my walk every day. Which is a big change within me. I attribute it all to the change in work environment, switching to both a job that I love at a location that I love. The combination has been refreshing.

So now I have to struggle to get my eating back under control. To stop being such an ass, basically, and get back on track. That turned out to be much, much more difficult than I thought. It’s easy to fall off track, much harder to reverse things.

Still, baby steps, I guess.

The photo here is the scene from the river I walk along on my lunch hour. Did I mention that I love where I work? :)

Well, that is certainly better. And what is even better than that is the fact that I knew this was going to be a good weigh-in. I worked extremely hard this past week to lose weight. I stayed within my daily food range most days, and I stayed well within my weekly range, too. I made sure I got at least 30 minutes exercise 5 days that week. I basically did everything perfectly. And it showed in my weight loss.

I have been making some changes to the foods I eat to try and orient myself with the Mediterranean diet. I’ve changed my breakfast to two slices of light, whole-grain bread (1 pt. for two slices) with cheese (2-3pts) melted on top. When I have time, I’ll put a couple of tomato slices on top of that. I have a lot of fruit throughout the day. I make a big salad to go with my lunch. I have a snack of whole-grain cereal and yogurt. It is hard doing some of the needed changes for the Mediterranean Diet – reducing the amount of poultry I eat is actually much harder than I imagined. I have migrated towards chicken and turkey for most dinners and a lot of lunches. It’s hard getting off of that!

On the other hand, some of the changes are pretty easy. Like I said above, the breakfast change was easy. As is adding in more hummus and other protein-rich veggies. For the most part, I love to eat most of the foods on the Mediterranean diet. As soon as I figure out how to get myself to reduce my poultry intake to two meals or so a week, add in fish for that same period, and then come up with other foods on the other days, I should be fine.

My main problem right now is the heat. It is going to make it hard for me to get in my daily walk. My big ol’ body isn’t so good with heat. I overheat with exercise; add in 95+ degree weather, and I’m in trouble. I am toying with the idea of taking an alternate train into work in the morning, then walking from that train station to the office. That’s about 25 minutes or so. I’ll still have to find a way to make up the other 25 minutes of exercise, though.

Anyway, all in all, this was a Very Good Week.
